What is ENS and ESI?
Early neurological stimulation (ENS) introduces puppies to mild stressors in a controlled way in order to reduce their stress response later in life. ENS consists of 5 short excerises to help build confidence and reduce stress in puppies. Studies have shown that ENS strengthens puppies' cardiovascular systems, adrenal glands, and immune system leading to a decrease in disease and overall stress levels.
From day 3, your puppy will be provided ENS. During this time, the puppies will also be introduced to a new scent everyday, this is known as early scent introduction (ESI). This too will help to improve confidence and awareness.
The Beginning Weeks of you Puppy's Life
Week 1 & 2
The goal of the first couple of weeks is to maintain a warm, safe, and clean environment for mom and pups. This is where most of our efforts will be focused. On day 3, ENS and ESI will begin.
Week 3
This week will begin to introduce your puppy to new objects. Each day a new, non movable item will be placed into their pen where they will get the chance to explore it. The hopes are that the puppy will approach the object and realize it is safe and there is no need to fear it. This, too, will help build confidence and nerve strength. New sounds are also added daily in order to desensitize the puppies to noises of everyday life (a short loud bang, a vaccuum running, ect.,), in order to help reduce a startle response in the puppies.
Gentle handling of the puppies will continue daily until the puppies go home to ensure a positive response to human touch and interaction.
Week 4
Exsposure for week 4 includes adding in another new object everyday only this time it is one that moves such as a ball or other silent toy. A larger play area will be introduced as well as a litter box where the puppies can begin their potty training. Introduction to their new food (gruel) will also begin. During this week, problem solving challenges such as obstacles will also be added to their daily routines. One by one we will also working on taking the puppies away from the litter in order to help reduce separation anxiety.
Week 5
More new objects and noises added, such as toys that move and make noise to further reduce their stress response and get them ready for their new home! Transition to kibble happens during this week. Potty training continues and the puppies are taken outside serveral times a day to help with this and allow for more time to explore and play!
Week 6
The puppies grow more social and are ready to meet more new friends! Meeting people with varying ages and looks helps to reach our goal of a confident and secure pup! Kennels are also introduced at this time for short periods to ensure a positive and comfortable experience. Puppy selection process may begin.
Week 7
Gentle handling and introduction of new objects will continue as stated above. Teachings of "sit" will be introduced as guided in your puppy welcome book as well as excersises to prevent resource guarding. More alone time is also pushed for.
Week 8
Puppies are ready for their new home! Daily love and care will continue until the puppy arrives at their forever home.
